Explorers

In our Explorers topic, we have started looking at Mount Everest and calculating the calories you might need to be able to reach the summit. We also had an assembly with Tori James, who was the youngest and first Welsh woman to reach the summit of Everest. She showed us all the kit she needed to take with her to the summit and showed us what could happen if something went wrong!


Numeracy and Maths

In the Autumn term, we revisited and developed lots of different mathematical concepts, such as addition and subtraction, division and multiplication, telling the time, and multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100.

In the Spring term, we have been looking at fractions, decimals and percentages and the links between them. We have also been simplifying fractions. Did you know that 0.1 is the same as  and 10%?


Language, Literacy and Communication

Recently in English, we have written a mystery narrative. We based our narrative on the video ‘Alma’, which showed a young girl alone in a snowy village. A doll that looked exactly like her appeared in a shop window and tempted her in. Alma then ended up turning into the doll!

This is a theme that we took forward into our own narratives; our characters turned into all sorts of things, like parrots, fortune teller machines and monkeys!  We practised building up the tension in our writing by using short sentences, ‘show- don’t tell’ and holding back information.

In our ‘Explorers’ topic, we have also been looking at deforestation and are almost ready to start writing our explanation texts about the causes and effects of deforestation.

 In Welsh, we have been practising using past tense verbs and building up lots of information about what we did on our holidays.


Science and Technology

In Science, we have been looking at conductors and insulators of sound and electricity. We planned an investigation to show how we would test whether a material was a good sound insulator or not.

In the Spring term, we are looking at materials and their states and properties. We went to Techniquest to explore the differences between solids, liquids and gases and had lots of fun!

In ICT, we have started creating ‘Explorer’ games on Scratch, and have started practising using forever loops and if statements.
